conference’s Act I is </span>hosted in-person in Victoria, B.C., at the
University of Victoria Department of Theatre (Faculty of Fine Arts) o<span style="color:black">n the territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən
(Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt) Peoples, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ
Peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. Act

2026 occurs at a significant moment in our discipline. While important
organizations, journals, theatre companies, and departments across the country
are marking their 50<sup>th</sup> anniversary celebrations, our field also
faces increasing suppression of institutional critique, backlash to advances in
EDI (see Fricker), and restructuring and closures of postsecondary theatre
training programs (Bellacicco, Lawton and Pollock). </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;line-height:115%;font-size:12pt;font-family:Aptos,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:6pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:black"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in;line-height:115%;font-size:12pt;font-family:Aptos,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:black">These
contexts prompt this call to collectively investigate our field’s inheritances
and, in the process, rehearse new futures. We <a name="m_-2023460466305163503__Int_NW8fkFoa">enter
into</a> this work by “theorizing inheritance as a commonly invoked explanation
for how things, ideas, and beings come into material and non-material
attributes through transferable belongingness” (Miller et al., 92). As we
reflect on 50 years of institutional history, the emergent field of
interdisciplinary inheritance studies poses important questions: “What does it
mean for both individuals and groups to be part of a tradition? When is it
warranted to opt out of these chains of endowments? What are the conditions of
the possibility of exit, and what are its costs? What kind of agency can
individuals and collectives exercise in relation to their inheritances?”
(Zúñiga in Miller et al., 114). Frantz Fanon’s theorization of “ethical
transit” (148) positions inheritance as a moment of transition within which
assimilation, heredity, cultural imposition, belongingness, racism, and colonial
violence must also be negotiated. In tandem with these provocations, we invite
conference participants to consider how rehearsal, as well as other
performance-based methodologies, might function as transformative acts (Maynard
and Simpson, Boal) in moments of transition that could inform new approaches to
inheritance studies. </span></p>

notre domaine est également l’objet de critique croissante de la part des
institutions, fait face <span style="color:black">à une
réaction hostile aux progrès réalisés en matière d’EDI (voir Fricker), et
assiste à la restructuration et à la fermeture de programmes de formation
théâtrale postsecondaires (Bellacicco, Lawton et Pollock). </span></span><span lang="FR"></span></p>

incite à mener une réflexion collective sur l’héritage de notre domaine et, ce
faisant, à envisager l’avenir qui nous attend. Nous abordons ce travail en
« théorisant l’héritage comme une explication couramment invoquée pour expliquer
comment les choses, les idées et les êtres acquièrent des attributs matériels
et immatériels grâce à une appartenance transférable » (Miller et al., 92).
Alors que nous réfléchissons à 50 ans d’histoire institutionnelle, le domaine
émergent des études interdisciplinaires sur l’héritage soulève des questions
importantes : « Que signifie pour les individus et les groupes de faire partie
d’une tradition ? Quand est-il justifié de se soustraire à ces processus de
transmission d’un héritage ? Comment peut-on s’en éloigner et quel en sera le
coût ? Quelle est la capacité d’agir des individus et des collectivités par
rapport à leur héritage ? » (Zúñiga dans Miller et al., 114). La théorisation
du « transit éthique » (148) par Frantz Fanon positionne l’héritage comme un
moment de transition au cours duquel l’assimilation, l’hérédité,
l’assujettissement culturel, l’appartenance, le racisme et la violence
coloniale doivent également être discutés. Nous invitons les personnes
participant au colloque à se demander comment, en lien avec ces préoccupations,
la répétition et d’autres méthodologies basées sur la performance pourraient
être utilisées comme des actes transformateurs (Maynard et Simpson, Boal), dans
des moments de transition susceptibles d’inspirer de nouvelles approches pour
les études sur l’héritage. </span><span lang="FR"></span></p>
