This milestone presents a perfect opportunity to revisit the evolution of theatre studies in Quebec and Francophone Canada, to explore the practices that have shaped their development, and to reflect on their trajectories in a world where a plurality of voices and approaches continues to enrich the field, but where its very institutions seem more fragile than ever.<br><br>From the early stages of theatre research conducted within the association, marked by a focus on the history of Quebec theatre, to more contemporary approaches that integrate research-creation or new performative practices, interdisciplinarity or intermediality, theatre studies in Quebec and Francophone Canada have always been a dynamic field, one in a constant process of reinvention. Despite considerable progress, however, notable gaps remain within theatre research in Quebec. These include French-language theatre practices in Canada, English-language theatre in Quebec, questions of diversity and inclusion, and even Indigenous performance, which, despite having recently attracted more substantial research, has long been almost completely ignored. We wish to open up space for reflections that consider the evolution of theatre studies in Quebec and Francophone Canada, as well as the boundaries and practices of this field of research.<br><br>This conference invites researchers, artists, and practitioners to take stock of more than half a century of research in Quebec and French-speaking Canada, examining not only advances in theatre studies in its many dimensions (theoretical, historical, critical, creative), but also its shortcomings and the challenges that lay ahead. We join the efforts of Hervé Guay and Yves Jubinville, who are preparing an event in April 2026 entitled “Theatre Studies in Question: Criticism, Research, Creation, and Teaching. Around Gilbert David” and of the SQET50 research group led by Claudia Blouin and Nicole Nolette, that will publish a special issue of the journal <em>Percées </em>(scheduled for 2027) on the evolution of theatre studies in Quebec through the history of the SQET.<br><br>For its part, the 2026 SQET conference welcomes proposals for papers, sessions, seminars, performances, workshops, etc., that address both the advances and challenges of theatre studies in Quebec and in Francophone Canada in relation to the following themes:</span></p><ol data-rte-list="default"><li><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">Theatre institutions and training contexts (historiography, methodology, theory, and institutional sociability: societies, journals, conferences, programs, etc.).</span></p></li><li><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">Artistic and scholarly trajectories (case studies or comparative studies; individual or collective trajectories of companies, artists, artist-educators, researchers).</span></p></li><li><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">Aesthetic movements and schools of thought in theatre and performance.</span></p></li><li><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">The relationships between theatre studies and practices in Quebec and the rest of the world.</span></p></li></ol><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 14px;"><br><strong>Submission guidelines</strong><br>We invite researchers, teachers, students, artists, archivists, critics, and members of the theatre community—in the broadest sense—to submit proposals for papers (max. 300 words) in French or English, accompanied by a title, a short biobibliography (150 words), and any special requirements, no later than December 15, 2025, to: <a href="mailto:info.sqet@gmail.com" target="_blank">info.sqet@gmail.com</a><br><br><strong>Presentation guidelines</strong><br>In keeping with the SQET’s tradition of research in French, presentations in English must be accompanied by a summary in French, to be displayed, for example, in a PowerPoint presentation or to be provided in the form of a handout distributed to attendants.<br><br><strong>Scientific Committee</strong><br>Véronique Basile Hébert (UQAM)<br>Claudia Blouin (U. C’est l’occasion idéale de revisiter l’évolution de ces études, d’explorer les pratiques qui ont façonné leur développement et de réfléchir à leurs trajectoires dans un monde où la pluralité des voix et des approches ne cesse d’enrichir le champ théâtral, mais où les institutions qui l’encadrent semblent plus fragiles que jamais.<br><br>Depuis les premières étapes de recherche théâtrale menée au sein de l’association, marquées par un accent particulier sur l’histoire du théâtre québécois, jusqu’aux approches plus contemporaines qui intègrent la recherche-création et les nouvelles pratiques performatives, l’interdisciplinarité et l’intermédialité, les études théâtrales au Québec et au Canada francophone ont toujours été un terrain dynamique, en constante réinvention. Pourtant, malgré des avancées considérables, il reste tout de même des angles morts dans la recherche théâtrale au Québec tels le théâtre francophone au Canada, le théâtre québécois d’expression anglaise, la question de la diversité et de l’inclusion et même celle des scènes autochtones qui, pour avoir récemment suscité des recherches plus conséquentes, n’en a pas moins longtemps été presque totalement ignorée. Nous souhaitons ouvrir l’espace à des réflexions qui questionnent l’évolution des études théâtrales, de même que les frontières du champ de la recherche et des pratiques qui s’y rapportent.<br><br>Ce colloque invite les chercheur·se·s, artistes et praticien·ne·s à prendre part à un dialogue pour faire le point sur plus d’un demi-siècle de recherche au Québec et au Canada francophone, en interrogeant non seulement les avancées des études théâtrales dans ses multiples dimensions (théoriques, historiques, critiques, créatives), mais aussi les zones d’ombre et les défis à venir. Nous nous joignons ainsi aux efforts déployés par Hervé Guay et Yves Jubinville qui préparent de leur côté, en avril 2026, un événement intitulé « Les études théâtrales en question : critique, recherche, création et enseignement.
