<span lang="EN-US">Sensorimotor integration in rhythm perception: The benefits of moving to the beat</span><br><br>Abstract: <span lang="EN-US">Sensorimotor integration is a complex multisensory
process involved in numerous daily tasks. Specifically, the processing
of predictable timing information is tightly linked with movement, and
this interaction is critical
for musical behaviours. Many neuroimaging studies show a clear
relationship between auditory and motor functions, where listening to a
rhythm is sufficient to activate regions of the brain that are important
for the planning and execution of movement. In this
talk I will give an overview of current thinking on temporal prediction
and discuss auditory-motor interactions involved in rhythm perception. I
will present select results from my own research that demonstrate how
movement not only interacts with the perceived
timing of auditory events, but also can improve timing abilities. The
talk will highlight how sensory feedback, types of motor production and
musical training mediate this interaction, and will outline possible
implications for this work.
