recommendation from Health Quality Ontario’s Ontario Health Technology Advisory
Committee (OHTAC) on robotic surgery for prostate cancer and for sharing your
personal stories about the effect that prostate cancer has had on your
life. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:
"Arial","sans-serif"'>The Ministry currently funds surgical prostatectomy at
the same amount whether a surgeon performs the procedure using a surgical robot
or using an open or laparoscopic technique. OHTAC’s advice, based on a review
of the available evidence, was that this current funding policy should
continue.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:
"Arial","sans-serif"'>OHTAC is composed of diverse representation, and also
includes patient representatives. This allows OHTAC to make decisions taking
into account different perspectives based on a comprehensive evidence review of
the benefits, harms, patient perspective and costs of a technology or health

recommendation and has a standardized process in place to review such recommendations
that takes into consideration: ministry priorities, implementation
options, the need for consultation with impacted stakeholders, and funding
concerns.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:
"Arial","sans-serif"'>The Ministry is committed to supporting innovation in
Ontario’s health care system. As part of the feedback on this recommendation,
the Ministry has heard concerns from patients, hospitals, and surgeons about
the need to train future Ontario surgeons on the use of cutting edge surgical
technologies. The Ministry is therefore currently consulting with the Chairs of
Ontario’s surgical training programs to understand these needs and potential
support for innovation in this critical area of healthcare.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:
"Arial","sans-serif"'>Lastly, the government is aware that some have raised
concerns around other aspects of prostate cancer care, in particular public
funding for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing. The Ontario Health
Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers PSA testing when a physician or nurse practitioner
suspects prostate cancer in their patient (based on family history and/or results
from physical examination) or when a man has been diagnosed with prostate
cancer, the PSA test is available at no charge to the patient through the
hospital or community laboratory service. In patients without history or
symptoms, PSA testing for routine or screening purposes is not covered by OHIP.
In these cases, patients are encouraged to have an informed conversation around
the risks and benefits of PSA testing, and can still obtain the test if the
patient is willing to pay for the test.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
