The 2008 field season marks the second field season at the Martin and
Martin II sites. Excavations in 2006 uncovered a previously unknown
lithic manufacturing locality, now known as the Martin II site, with
chipped stone tools, pottery and faunal remains from the Early Woodland
period, ca.1300 to 500 BC.Students will receive instruction in the
Native occupations of the Western New York region, fieldwork methods,
Health and Safety training and laboratory procedures before entering the
field and gaining hands-on experience. In the field, work will continue
to relocate the multi-component Martin site as well as to define the
boundaries and further explore the remains of the lithic manufacturing
locality at Martin II. Students will also clean and learn to catalogue
artifacts in a laboratory setting. The BSC Archaeological Field School
also sponsors a public archaeology open-house at the site in
collaboration with Beaver Island State Park naturalists and the Grand
Island Historical Society. Field school students educate the public
through tours of the archaeological site and will supervise public
volunteers of all ages.
