[Anthsoc] Field school - Buffalo State College

The 2008 field season marks the second field season at the Martin and 
Martin II sites. Excavations in 2006 uncovered a previously unknown 
lithic manufacturing locality, now known as the Martin II site, with 
chipped stone tools, pottery and faunal remains from the Early Woodland 
period, ca.1300 to 500 BC.Students will receive instruction in the 
Native occupations of the Western New York region, fieldwork methods, 
Health and Safety training and laboratory procedures before entering the 
field and gaining hands-on experience. In the field, work will continue 
to relocate the multi-component Martin site as well as to define the 
boundaries and further explore the remains of the lithic manufacturing 
locality at Martin II. Students will also clean and learn to catalogue 
artifacts in a laboratory setting.The BSC Archaeological Field School 
also sponsors a public archaeology open-house at the site in 
collaboration with Beaver Island State Park naturalists and the Grand 
Island Historical Society. Field school students educate the public 
through tours of the archaeological site and will supervise public 
volunteers of all ages.
