Subject: FW: Balkan Heritage Field School Projects in 2011

Dear colleagues, partners, students and friends,

I am pleased to announce that Balkan Heritage (BH) Field School has just
opened the application session for ten projects (in 2011) in the following
areas: Archaeology, Art History, Restoration and Conservation of Artifacts
and Monuments and Christian Art and Culture. Thank to the partnership with
New Bulgarian University, Sofia, Bulgaria 6 academic credits (for two-week
projects), 9 academic credits (for four-week projects) and 12 academic
credits (for six-week projects) will be granted upon request to students who
attend to these projects.



Affiliated partner institutions/organizations: New Bulgarian University,
Varna Regional Museum of History, Blagoevgrad Regional Museum of History,
Archaeological Museum of Sozopol (Bulgaria), Fulbright Commission (USA/
Bulgaria); Youth Cultural Center - Bitola, National Institute of Stobi,
National Institute and Museum - Bitola (Macedonia), Conservation Of
Sculptures, Monuments And Objects (Canada);



Guest specialists/professors from: Queen's University (Canada), Institute of
Archaeology and Ethnology, Nanterre (France).



Balkan Heritage (BH) Field School (est. 2003) functions as a legal part of
Balkan Heritage Foundation - a Bulgarian public, non-profit,
non-governmental organization. It implements various educative projects in
the areas of Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, Folklore, Art History,
Restoration and Conservation of artefacts and monuments, Fine Arts and
Theology with participation of students, scholars and volunteers from all
over the World. Balkan Heritage Mission is to support study, protection,
restoration and promotion of sites, artefacts and practices belonging or
related to the cultural heritage of South-Eastern Europe.

CHURCHES 1 (Western Bulgaria)

An expedition for documentation of medieval frescoes preserved in abandoned
churches and chapels in remote areas of Western Bulgaria. In 2011, for the
first time the "Fresco Hunting" Photo Expedition will expend the existing
iconographic schemes of imaging the Medieval Churches in Western Bulgaria by
adopting Reflectance <http://rtiican.wordpress.com/>  Transformation Imaging
(RTI) and Near Infrared Reflectroscopy (IRR).

Dates: Core Field School Project: 14 - 28 May 2011 and Extended Field School
Project: 7 May - 4 June, 2011

EUROPE - EXCAVATION OF THE EARLY NEOLITHIC SETTLEMENT ILINDENTSI

Excavations of one of the first Neolithic settlements in Europe (6200-5500
BC), near Ilindentsi , Southwestern Bulgaria.

Dates: 12 - 25 June, 2011

OF ROMAN POTTERY

The workshop will guide the participants through the history and technology
of Roman and Late Roman pottery and consequent stages of archaeological
conservation, restoration, documentation and study. It will take place in
Stobi (the capital of Macedonia Secunda). Both the theoretical and practical
courses will be based on Roman pottery found in the ancient city of Stobi.
During the workshop participants will work with authentic Roman shards.

Excavations at the sacred precinct (temenos) of the Ancient Greek city of
Apollonia Pontica on St. Kirik Island, Sozopol, Bulgaria. Periods of
occupation: Archaic and Classical Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Early
Byzantine (seventh century BC - seventh century AD).
Two field school sessions are available:

First session: August 3 - August 17, 2011;

Second session: August 18 - September 1, 2011.

Academic credits available for students: up to 9

both Emona and Sozopol (ancient Apollonia Pontica) on the Black sea coast,
Bulgaria. Both the theoretical and practical courses will be based on
Ancient Greek pottery found in Sozopol. During the workshop participants
will work with authentic Ancient Greek shards.

Dates: September 5 - 18, 2011.

The workshop will guide the participants through  the history, techniques

mural paintings. Both the theoretical and practical courses will be based on
authentic wall-painting fragments found in the ancient city of Stobi.

Dates: September 5 - 18, 2011.
