Subject: [Classical-studies] Classical and Medieval Archaeology Opportunity

Dear students,

Want to work on a real archaeological site in the English countryside?
Want to live in a castle for the summer? Then read on ...

Last fall, the Co-Directors of Medieval Studies and the Chair of
Classical Studies met with a supervisor at Herstmonceux Castle in East
Sussex, England. The castle, part of Ontario's Queen's University,
hosts the Bader International Study Centre and its Field School in
British Archaeology.

The Field School offers a fantastic experience that is open to our
majors. SJU / UW students can travel to England during the summer and
spend five weeks studying and doing real field excavations. There are
two sites currently under excavation: one is a Roman settlement, the
other a medieval fortification.

Students who enroll in the field school can receive 3.0 units on their
transcript toward their UW degree. The program includes all housing
costs (students LIVE IN THE CASTLE!) and meals. It also includes a
five-day "summative" trip to visit some of the major English
archaeological sites.

The total cost is CAD $6290 (tuition, housing, meals, and trip) but
does not include airfare to and from England.

Since this is a new opportunity for our majors, I am curious to know
whether any of you are interested. If you are, please contact me as
quickly as possible so we can explore whether it is possible to get
you over to England this summer to study Roman and medieval
archaeology!

With all best regards and on behalf of David, my Co-Director and
partner-in-crime,

Steven

P.S. I attach the brochure to this message.
