Dear ANTH Society/Students and Alumni,

We hope you will join us for this year's Sally Weaver Award
<https://uwaterloo.ca/anthropology/current-graduate-students/sally-weaver-award>
Presentation and Guest Lecture.

Our guest speaker is Dr. Gary Warrick, Associate Professor, Indigenous
Studies and History, Wilfrid Laurier University. The title of Dr. Warrick's
lecture is: "The Challenges of Doing Indigenous Archaeology in Canada."
Indigenous archaeology advocates a decolonizing approach to doing
community-based archaeology with, by, and for Indigenous peoples on their
ancestral sites. Decolonization of archaeology is a laudable goal, but
there are a number of serious challenges to its actual achievement. This
presentation will examine the political and ethical problems faced by an
archaeologist intent on doing research archaeology in collaboration with
Indigenous communities in Canada.

Gary Warrick worked for ten years as Regional Archaeologist with the
Ontario Ministry of Transportation and has taught at the Brantford Campus
of Wilfrid Laurier University since it opened in 1999, teaching in the
Department of Indigenous Studies and History. He has conducted
archaeological research of a 19th century Mohawk-Mississauga community in
Brantford, Ontario and is completing a community-driven oral history
project in South Africa. His current research is focused on the archaeology
and historical ecology of the Huron-Wendat, Simcoe County, Ontario.

This year's award recipient is Ashley Piskor, a graduate student in Public
Issues Anthropology. Ashely's research interests are Public and Indigenous
Archaeology, specifically, how archaeology can be used to promote social
justice and community development.
