Prize Proliferation
Awards, prizes, and honours have been growing at an increasingly rapid clip
during recent decades. What accounts for this trend? What does it reveal
about our contemporary self-congratulatory culture?
Professor Joel Best, University of Delaware
Joel Best is a Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University
of Delaware. His recent books include: "Damned Lies and Statistics" (2001),
"More Damned Lies and Statistics" (2004), "Flavor of the Month: Why Smart
People Fall for Fads" (2006), and "Social Problems" (2008). He is a past
president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems and the Midwest
Sociological Society, a former editor of the journal "Social Problems," and
currently the Editor-in-Chief of the new electronic journal "Sociology
Compass."
