*Female Husbands in the News: Same-Sex Marriage & 18th Century Media *

Stories about women in male disguise who married other women were a
common feature of eighteenth century media. Such tales were found in
chapbooks, newspaper articles, ballads, court documents, plays, and
novels. These so-called female husbands precede the modern institution
of same-sex marriage by hundreds of years, yet the eighteenth-century
representation of the their lives, and the lives of their wives,
anticipates the media coverage of gay marriage today.

*Join us* /Tuesday, November 25th/, 2008 /at 7:00 p.m./ in the /James J.
Brown Auditorium/ at the /Waterloo Public Library/ as Fraser Easton,
Associate Professor, English Language & Literature, presents stories of
these women, discusses how they were represented in different media, and
shows what they offer to an understanding of the modern coverage of gay
marriage.
