Dear Colleagues:

Cinematheque Waterloo (www.cinemathequewaterloo.org) is a new cultural
initiative launching this fall that aims to promote an understanding
and appreciation of films in the Waterloo Region. Its creators (a
couple of staff members at CIGI), supported by others in the community
(including myself), conceived this project to inspire and promote film
appreciation and culture. Movies are accessible at movie theatres, on
DVD and online; however, film as a creative art form and cultural
phenomenon, as well as "an evening at the theatre," have been lost in
the widespread dissemination of mainstream cinema. Cinematheque
Waterloo aims to recapture the essence of film with this unique
initiative.

The first event will take place on October 10th at the Princess
Cinema. Cinematheque Waterloo will be sponsoring a showing of The
Glass Box, a film produced by local director Matt Finlin (featued in
an article in The Record this week). He will also be present during
the showing to answer any questions the audience may have about his
work.

The first series will begin in November, featuring films from the
French New Wave period.

If you are interested in the arts of film, please consider becoming a
member to assist in the long-term sustainability of the project.
Membership is $60 / year and includes:

      * Access to all regular Cinematheque Waterloo screenings
      * Access to all sponsored/special Cinematheque Waterloo screenings
(This Includes The Glass Box, $8.00)
      * Includes standard membership to the Princess Twin and Princess
Cinema ($10.00 value) | benefits
      * Acknowledgement in the programme guide / website / annual reports
      * Discounts at select retailers and businesses

The upcoming fall film schedule is online at
www.cinemathequewaterloo.org. Memberships can be purchased at the
website and at the Princess Cinema.

The success of the inaugural season will be largely dependent on
funding and members. If you know anyone in the Waterloo area who may
have an interest in film please take a moment to let them know about
Cinematheque Waterloo. If you are teaching courses in film or that
touch on film and cultural history please consider sharing information
about the Cinematheque with your students.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at
info at cinemathequewaterloo.org. You may also write to me at
kmcguirk at uwaterloo.ca.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Kevin McGuirk
