Author, activist, and /IS Scholar in Virtual Residence/ CORY DOCTOROW
<http://craphound.com/> presents "The Information Economy is Not Based
on Restricting Information" this Saturday, September 26th at the Arts
Lecture Hall (Room 113) at 2:30pm.
Cory will explain his belief that copyright laws result in regulations
for all human endeavors in this century. Cory argues, "The industrial
revolution wasn't based on restricting access to machines. The
information revolution is not based on restricting access to
information. But copyright extremists continue to insist that a strong
economy requires pervasive enforcement, from spying on your network
connection to terminating your access to the digital world."
After his lecture, Cory will entertain a question and answer session,
and selected copies of his books will be available for purchase and
signing.
The Independent Studies program celebrates its 40th birthday this fall
09 term. Celebrations will continue throughout the coming year until
August 2010, and we will keep you advised of these events. The founding
of the /IS Scholar in Virtual Residence/ marks our first celebration,
and Cory has generously accepted this posting, mentoring three promising
IS creative writers each term over the next year. Born in Toronto, Cory
now lives in London, England and hence the need for a ‘virtual’
relationship with us now!
Cory was an IS pre-thesis student in four consecutive terms from 1993 to
1994, and has subsequently become one of Canada’s formidable bloggers,
journalist, editor, Internet activist, and award-winning science-fiction
writer. Cory is the former European Director of the Electronic Frontier
Foundation <http://www.eff.org>, and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group
<http://www.openrightsgroup.org/> which advocates the preservation of
individual rights online in the digital age. His latest novel, /Makers/,
will be released in October this year.
Thank you for forwarding this announcement to those in your network who
would be interested in learning about Cory’s work and ideas. The lecture
will be taped and please contact Susan Gow at IS for details.
