Cultural Encounters / Encountering Cultures

A series of ten public lectures by members of the Faculty of Arts at the
University of Waterloo

Winter Term 2010 – Mondays at 4:30pm – Arts Lecture Hall Room 113

Join your Faculty of Arts colleagues as they explore the interaction of
societies and cultures.

Upcoming lecture: Monday 8 February 2009, 4:30pm, Arts Lecture Hall Room
113
Joan Coutu (Fine Arts):
Seeing from Afar: "Orientalism" and Nineteenth-century Art
This lecture will explore the idea of ‘the other’ in nineteenth-century art,
with a particular emphasis on French painting. The investigation will be
twofold: examining artists’ depictions of the ‘other’ within the context of
nineteenth-century imperialism, and artists’ adoption of non-European
painting techniques. Some of the artists that will be discussed include
J.A.D. Ingres, Eugène Delacroix, Jean-Lèon Gérôme and Edouard Manet.
