Media Makeover: Things, Services & Digital Rushes
Thursday, March 25, 2010
12:00 noon
University of Waterloo, Carl Pollock Hall (CPH) 3602
The media production industry has undergone a revolution in the way it
creates and distributes content. Industry-specific technologies
developed over decades have been replaced by IT-based hardware and
software infrastructure. Now the industry is looking afresh at the way
it works and is engaging enthusiastically with the R&D community to
fully explore the potential of the IT transition.
In this lecture, Paul Walland, Digital Media Group manager at University
of Southampton's IT Innovation Centre, will present a European
perspective on IT-based production. Drawing on his 20 year experience in
the broadcast technology industry, Paul will describe the key
motivations that are driving continuing innovation by content producers
and technology providers.
He will introduce pan-European initiatives through which the industry is
actively influencing the European R&D agenda, speculate on the relevance
of emerging European Research Initiatives such as Service-based
Everything in the Future Internet, and highlight opportunities for
transatlantic collaboration such as through EC R&D funding programmes.
Paul will also present some of the work that is being conducted by his
own group at IT Innovation Centre in collaboration with major UK and
European production and technology companies.
Bring your brown bag lunch and enjoy this lecture.
