Mokhtar Lamani Appearance on Campus

 Mokhtar Lamani will be appearing at the University of Waterloo on May 25,
2010 to discuss his career in internatinal diplomacy and his experineces in
working towards peace in Iraq.  This event will take place from 11:30-12:30
in RCH 105 and will be open to all University of Waterloo Students, as well
as the wider community.  Please join us for what is sure to be an insightful
and informative event.

 Mokhtar Lamani is a Moroccan  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambassador>
ambassador who has had a distinguished career in international diplomacy. He
held several positions with the General Secretariat of the League of Arab
States (1980-97 / 2006-2007) and was the Permanent Observer of the
Organization of the Islamic Conference to the United Nations (1998-2005).
He served as an Officer in Charge of Iraq-Kuwait dispute, and mediator in
the prisoners of war exchange issues; Coordinator for the Secretariat reform
and restructuring in Tunis and Cairo (1988-92); Deputy Permanent Observer to
the European Community in Brussels (1984-88); Coordinator of the Euro-Arab
Dialogue and the Afro-Arab cooperation (1980-94) ; Permanent Observer of the
Organization of the Islamic Conference to the United Nations (1998-2005) ;
Special Permanent Representative for Iraq (2006-2007).

As an ambassador of the  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_League> Arab
League, Lamani was sent to  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq> Iraq to
persuade its bitterly divided  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiite> Shiite,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunni> Sunni,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurds_in_Iraq> Kurdish, and
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian> Christian leaders to make peace.  

Since 2007, Lamani has been a visiting IDRC (International Development
Research Centre) senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance
Innovation in Waterloo, Ontario.
