Beckie Scott

Mathieu Doucet

University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo’s recent courageous decision to suspend its football team in light of positive
tests for Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) has once again put the issue of PEDs into the public eye.
PEDs are certainly not confined to either football or Waterloo, and the fight against their use is often
described as a fight to save the very spirit of sport. But what exactly is wrong with the use of PEDs? Why
do we prohibit their use, and how should we deal with those who insist on using them? In this
workshop, we will discuss some of the philosophical and ethical issues surrounding the use of PEDs in
sports.

Speakers are Beckie Scott, 2‐time Olympic medalist in cross‐country skiing, member of the Athlete
Committee for both the World Anti‐Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee, and a
tireless advocate for drug‐free sport; and Mathieu Doucet, an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Philosophy who specializes in ethics and has worked on ethical issues in the pharmaceutical industry.
The workshop is open to anyone with an interest in ethics in sports. The presentations will be followed
by a question and answers session. All are welcome.
