Dear Colleagues,

This Saturday evening, June 4th, at 7:00 pm, the Department of English Language and Literature hosts a debate in the Hagey Hall Theatre of the Humanities between /God is Not Great/ author Christopher Hitchens and Professor Barry Brummett (University of Texas at Austin) on the resolution "Religion has been a positive force in culture."

As many of you know, Mr. Hitchens has faced some significant health challenges during the past year. Unfortunately, he cannot travel to the Waterloo Region for this event. We are delighted, however, that he has confirmed that he will participate in the live debate by video link, his voice having improved over the last little while. Jian Ghomeshi of CBC Radio's /Q/ will moderate.

Although the main venue for the debate is sold out, an overflow site has been arranged at the Theatre of the Arts. Tickets, $10 each, are available from the Humanities Theatre box office on a first come, first serve basis: http://theatrecentre.uwaterloo.ca/boxoffice.php.

We hope to see you on Saturday,

Shelley Hulan
English Language and Literature
