6:30-7:30 pm: Denyse Thomasos Artist Talk,
7:30-9:00 pm: UWAG Reception
The University of Waterloo Department of Fine Arts is proud to present their Graduate Studio Open House featuring works by MFA candidates Lisa Birke, Shauna Born, Nicholas Breon, Natalie Hunter, Linda Martinello, Jessica Massard, Rob Nichols and Josh Peresotti, followed by an artist talk by New York based painter Denyse Thomasos. The presentation acknowledges Thomasos’ participation as one of four international artists who hosted graduate candidates from the MFA program during the 2011 Shantz Internship.
Denyse Thomasos has shown her work nationally and internationally. She graduated from the Yale School of Art’s MFA painting program in 1989 before moving to New York's East Village, where she currently lives and works. She has received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, The New York Foundation for the Arts, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Committed to political themes and global issues, Thomasos’ research focuses on vernacular architecture. This interest has led her to look at super jails in response to the global privatized prison crisis. Expanding into the gallery space, the outcome is a series of large-scale abstract paintings and architectural gestures that occupy the room. Denyse Thomasos is represented by Lennon, Weinberg Inc. in New York and the Olga Korper Gallery in Toronto.
In addition to the current exhibitions Clutch and With Crystal Column and Clear Shrines of Pearl, UWAG will present a live demonstration of Donut Burner by Toronto artist Steven Laurie outside of the south entrance to the gallery at 5:45 pm. The open house and artist talk will be followed by a reception in the gallery at 7:30 pm.
All events are free and open to the public.
