Matthew Carver
Polizei

During his travels, Canadian born Matthew Carver began to notice the increasingly militarized presence of local law enforcement at public gatherings and protests. Carver made note of this phenomena in Germany, Malaysia, England, China and Canada, and began to incorporate his observations into a series of paintings. Polizei ranges from widescreen panoramas to anamporphic distortions that can only be viewed correctly by using reflective devices. The series parallels recent global headlines from the controversy over the G20 summit in Toronto to the uprising in Tahrir Square, from the Occupy movement to the student protests in Quebec. His paintings infer the global struggle for democracy and social justice by pointedly putting viewers in the uncomfortable position of facing down assertive and increasingly anonymous military forces. Adad Hannah
The Russians

In the summer of 2010, Adad Hannah traveled to St. Petersburg and began recording aspects of daily life there. The Russians captures a predominantly younger population shot in both urban and rural settings. Due to the difficulty of shooting in unfamiliar surroundings and operating in a foreign language, the subjects often unpredictably break character while attempting to follow the artist's directions to remain still. Despite the careful staging of each scene, from posing the subjects to selecting their wardrobes, the end result is less formal than previous works and suggests a more improvisational feel. Building on an aesthetic sensibility that suggests the documentary snapshots of Robert Frank, the staged imagery of Jeff Wall and the 19th century tableaux vivant, Hannah's work is a surprising glimpse into contemporary Russian life.
