Faculty of Arts Orientation Update - Magical Mayhem is about to begin

Hello everyone,

It's Stephanie Bromley, the Arts Student Engagement Officer.  Magical Mayhem is about to begin!

Orientation Week 2013 begins this Sunday and runs until next Saturday with our grand finale, Monte Carlo night!  The week is full of purposeful programming focused on helping our new students transition to university-life.

Once again I wanted to highlight the Arts Faculty Orientation Committee members (or Arts FOC).  They exemplify our core theme words - responsibility, perseverance, courage, integrity - and have amazed me with their spirit and their dedication to our first-year students.


Ø  Amanda - 4A French Teaching Specialization, Math minor

Ø  Chris - 4A Music, Arts and Business Co-op, Computer Science minor

Ø  Erin - 4A Fine Arts, Arts and Business Co-op

Ø  Libby - 4A, Accounting and Financial Management, Psychology minor

As part of the Orientation Week programing the Arts Undergraduate Office (AUO) is hosting three academic programs in addition to the First-Year Experience program out of the Student Success Office.  We're also launching our new Arts Peer Mentor program during Orientation Week.

Ø  September 3 - Welcome to the Wonderful World of Arts - The Dean's welcome address

Ø  September 4 - Wizards Get Wiser - Academic information sessions by the AUO

Ø  September 5 - These Major Moments and BBQ - Current students with new students to share their experiences; sponsored by the AUO

Hello everyone!

It's Stephanie Bromley.  As part of my new role as the Arts Student Engagement Officer I'm responsible for first-year transition programming including Arts Orientation!

Orientation Week is a combination of academic support and community-building programming focused on new student transition (first-years, transfers, and Grads).  Our goal is to showcase the support available for new students for their academic and personal success at Waterloo.

Orientation Week is a critical transition moment for new students.  We're working hard to ensure all students receive relevant and engaging programming.

I'm pleased to introduce a group of students who are an extremely important part of Orientation, the Arts Faculty Orientation Committee, the "Arts FOC" - Erin Leach, Amanda Cloutier, Chris Snow, Libby Duckworth!

·         These enthusiastic students were hired in December.

·         They have hired, are training, and mentoring over 150 Arts Leaders.

·         They have been focusing on building community and strong ties within the Leader team so they can all support our new students.

·         They have been revamping and developing exciting and meaningful Arts programming for the summer months and for Orientation Week.

The Arts FOC role, and the time commitment required, is extensive - over 1000 hours by the end of Orientation Week!  Erin, Amanda, Chris, and Libby, while hired by Arts, are student volunteers!

Orientation is often a mystery for faculty and staff!  I'd like to change this.  I invite you to learn more about Arts Orientation and hopefully be part of the Orientation experience in some way.

·         Your understanding of and enthusiasm for this transition program will go a long way in supporting and welcoming our new students - first-year, transfers and Grads!

·         The more we all understand the student transition experience (Student Life 101<https://uwaterloo.ca/student-success/current-first-year-students/student-life-101>, Orientation<https://uwaterloo.ca/orientation/>, and Arts Course Selection<https://uwaterloo.ca/arts/current-undergraduates/course-selection/fall-first-year-students>) the better equipped we'll be to support and guide our new students.
