How to Read a Map of Eden

Dr. James Bielo
Miami University, Oxford, Ohio
Author of Emerging Evangelicals: Faith, Modernity, and the Desire for Authenticity (2011) and Words upon the Word: An Ethnography of an Evangelical Bible Study (2009)
In Kentucky, a young earth creationist ministry is planning a $150 million theme park, Ark Encounter, featuring a full-sized replica of Noah's ark. In this talk, Dr. Bielo explores how the creative team uses immersion to teach creationist history and convert a skeptical public. The goal of this project is to render creationism legible outside the frame of religion-science debates. Through this case, Dr. Bielo extends the dialogical approach to the construction of culture from his previous work on evangelical reading and the Emerging Church.
Thursday, February 28, 2:30-4 pm
EV3 – 4408, Environment 3 Building, UW
Note: Dr. Bielo will also speak on Promises of Place: Reflections from the Emerging Church on Friday, March 1st, 7:30 pm, Great Hall, Conrad Grebel University College
Sponsored by Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo Department of Religious Studies, and the Wilfrid Laurier University Department of Religion and Culture.
