The NetherMind collective organized four influential exhibitions in Toronto from 1991–1995, in which the original group of eleven artists secured post-industrial spaces and made artworks and sculptural interventions in response to each unique environment. The recently reunited group of eight artists share an affinity for the use of unexpected materials and continue to address the spatial and psychological possibilities of site-responsive practices. Their projects tend to be interactive or experiential, appealing to the senses through tactility, sound, light or movement. The works also exhibit a dark sense of humour and an absurd playfulness in the manner that unexpected elements are used and juxtaposed. For this exhibition, NetherMind will install a series of new and recent works that respond to the unique qualities of the gallery and its architecture, fittingly the original site of Waterloo Manufacturing.
