Gallery One
C. Wells
Place and Space (REDUX)

C. Wells has developed an artistic practice akin in spirit to that of a contemporary topographer. By exclusively using line marker paint—an industrial medium used to mark the boundaries of roads and highways to regulate vehicular traffic—he investigates the history and heritage of line marking, beginning with its origins in Trenton, Michigan in 1911. Whether replicating the language of the lines or using the paint itself as a material, Wells’ practice oscillates between landscape, abstraction and assisted readymades. His work proposes the ubiquitous median strip as a modern emblem of both urban and rural spaces. (REDUX) comprises a selection of recent works that debuted in the 2013 exhibition Place and Space, organized by the artist for 270 Sherman Avenue North in Hamilton.

Gallery Two
Soft Turns
Behind the High Grass

Soft Turns is the partnership of Sarah Jane Gorlitz and Wojciech Olejnik. Inspired by a post-war travel book authored by Czech travellers and filmmakers Jiri Hanzelka and Miroslav Zikmund found at a Berlin flea market, they began to use its contents as a means of addressing the vast social, historical and political upheavals of the period. The recent video P-19720 refers to the license plate of the iconic Tatra 87 passenger vehicle that Hanzelka and Zikmund used to drive across Africa, South and Central America from 1947-1950. Adopting the Czech explorers as kindred spirits, the artists use the remnants of the book as a guide for their own explorations. Behind the High Grass is an installation of stop motion animations and readymade artifacts that evoke this fragmentary document.
