The Monster as Modern-Day Myth

More than just a city-stomping reptilian film star, Godzilla began as an allegory for the Japanese war experience, especially the horror of the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Through lecture and a viewing of the original 1954 Godzilla film, we will explore
the multiple meanings that a monster can take in an age of religious, social, and scientific anxiety.
Jeff Wilson is a Professor of Religious Studies at Renison University College. He is the author of three books and numerous articles and essays.
