lois andison
relay

relay is a mid-career survey exhibition investigating the multidisciplinary art practice of Lois Andison. Representing a fifteen-year period of artistic production that ranges from kinetic sculpture to video installation to text-based artworks, this segment of the survey features two significant large installations (solving man ray’s obstruction and the floor’s the limit) alongside several new works created specifically for the exhibition (nudging marcel and salt, sugar, sweet, sour). While many of her recent works draw heavily on the influence of 20th century masters, including Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso, they question the orthodoxy of the Modernist hierarchy by using appropriation, movement and wordplay to challenge our perceptions of gender and meaning. Andison’s work engages the body and mind equally through her complex engineering of elegant minimalist constructions.

Lois Andison is a Canadian artist who has exhibited nationally and internationally in Toronto, Montréal, Lethbridge, Mexico City, Boston, Buffalo and New York. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Bank of Montreal and the Donovan Collection. She is an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo and lives in Toronto. Lois Andison is represented by Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto and Art Mûr, Montréal.

Co-presented by the Doris McCarthy Gallery at the University of Toronto Scarborough (Sep 2–Nov 8, 2014), Rodman Hall Art Centre/Brock University (Oct 21, 2014–Jan 18, 2015), and the University of Waterloo Art Gallery (Sep 11–Nov 1, 2014). The exhibitions will be accompanied by a forthcoming publication and have been made possible with the generous support of the Bob Harding and Lois Claxton HSS Endowment Fund, Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
