Tomorrow (May 29), Marc Bauder will be at the University of Waterloo as part of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies’ annual conference. He’ll talk about how he and his brother conceived and executed the public art installation Lichtgrenze (Border of Lights) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The presentation will be in English, and all are welcome. Simply come to HH2107 at 3:30 p.m.

For more information on the event, visit http://wcgs.ca<http://wcgs.ca/>. For more information on the project itself, visit http://lichtgrenze.de<http://lichtgrenze.de/>. Although much of it is in German, the photos will show you the size, scope, and impact of the 8,000 lit balloons.

The Department’s Annual Conference, Visual, Cultural and Literary Codes, also takes place tomorrow and begins at 10:00 a.m. Students will give presentations on their topics of research:

"Die Funktion der Modalpartikel nun mal in gesprochener Sprache" - Isabelle Eberz
"Das Berliner Journal während des Ersten Weltkrieges" - Sonja Schäfer and Caterina Katzer
“Narrative Codes of Madness - Unreliable Narration in Steven Uhly’s Adams Fuge and Martin Horvath’s Mohr im Hemd oder wie ich auszog, die Welt zu retten” - Daniela Roth
“Power, Agency and Assisted Dying in Lukas Barfuss’ Alices Reise in die Schweiz” - Derek Andrews
“Alles nur Ketchup und Plastik? - Animal Death as Spectacle in Michael Haneke’s Benny’s Video and Caché” - Mario Hirstein

Dr. Henn-Memmesheimer from Üniversität Mannheim will deliver her keynote presentation at 11:10. She’ll talk about how images form an integral component of social communication and will discuss the idea of a fast-moving, increasingly volatile reality that emerges largely from the power of images. Her presentation will be in German.
