Please join us on Monday, 14 March at 12:30 PM in HH 117 for a light lunch with this event!

Sean Mills<http://history.utoronto.ca/faculty/millss/> from the University of Toronto will be giving a talk on his new book, A Place in the Sun: Haiti, Haitians, and the Remaking of Quebec<http://www.mqup.ca/place-in-the-sun--a-products-9780773546455.php>.

In both popular memory and scholarly literature, the story of the Quiet Revolution and the story of changing migration patterns of the 1960s have been kept at a well-guarded distance, never crossing or impinging on each other's well-worn narratives. In this presentation, Mills will read the history of the Quiet Revolution alongside the history of the beginning Haitian exile to Quebec, showing that these histories were profoundly entangled with each other.

Quebec and Haiti are both former colonies of the French empire, and they share a long and complex history of interactions. Beginning in the early 20th century, Canadian banks were operating in Haiti and intellectual and religious exchanges were taking place between Haitian and French-Canadian elites. By the 1940s, many French-Canadian missionaries began operating in Haiti, and they would come to occupy important roles in schools, health care institutions, and in the training of priests. Mills argues that this long history shaped the climate of 1960s Quebec, when Haitian exiles began arriving in Montreal (and, to a lesser degree, other cities in Quebec) fleeing the Duvalier dictatorship.

Sean published the critically-acclaimed Empire Within: Postcolonial Thought and Political Activism in Sixties Montreal in 2010.
