"Eurydice" at UWaterloo Theatre and Performance

The Theatre & Performance Program in the Department of Drama and Speech Communication at the University of Waterloo would like to invite you to their fall production of Eurydice written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by guest director, Matt White.  Designers include: Kelly Wolf (Set & Props), Sharon E. Secord (Costumes), Paul Cegys (Video & Lighting) and Colin Labadie (Sound).

To bring back the dead, don't look back. It's the one condition the ruler of the Underworld gives to Orpheus, a gifted musician who braves Hell to find his wife, Eurydice. A simple enough demand, but all too soon Orpheus looks back and must watch as his wife disappears forever. Her parting words: "Farewell" - and nothing else.



Playwright Sarah Ruhl challenges this perplexing silence in Eurydice, a contemporary retelling of the classic Greek myth. The twist: it is centred on Eurydice, not her husband, and her exploration of love, empowerment, and the Underworld. It is a timely story about loving - and loving oneself - juxtaposed against the tragedy of myth, and tinged with the whimsy of raining elevators, talking stones and houses made of string.



"I'm not interested in another male-centric telling of this myth," says director Matt White. "Eurydice is not about the man who turns back too soon and loses his wife for a second time - it's about Eurydice and what she is willing to sacrifice in exchange for freedom. She demands to be taken seriously as an equal; to become the Musician, rather than the instrument played."



This reframing of a male-dominated text could not have come at a more appropriate time. As the only Canadian university in the United Nations HeForShe's Impact 10x10x10 initiative, the University of Waterloo has pledged to create a gender equitable campus. Nationally, gender equity has seen major leaps forward, including the first gender-balanced cabinet in Canadian history.
Through productions like Eurydice, the department aims to contribute to this ongoing national and international dialogue about female agency, empowerment, and equality.
