ECHO OF THE UNKNOWN
JANET BIGGS

November 3–December 17, 2016
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 3, 5:00–8:00 PM
Artist’s Talk: Tuesday, November 1, 3:00-4:00 PM (ECH 1219)

Echo of the Unknown stems from the artist’s memories of her grandfather's struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Centering on the four-channel video installation Can't Find My Way Home, the exhibition addresses the challenges of maintaining a sense of self in the face of physical and psychological extremes. Footage of the artist exploring the Merkers crystal cavern is contrasted with a neurologist doing research in a lab, and an older gentleman wandering the aisles of a gem and mineral show. By drawing parallels between mineral formations in the cavern, those generated in a petri dish, and those found at a convention, Biggs elicits the complex skein of memory, and its loss.

This exhibition has been organized by Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston.

Janet Biggs is a Brooklyn based artist whose video, photography and performance has been exhibited internationally. Her work often includes images of individuals in extreme landscapes or situations, from sulfur miners inside an active volcano to a kayak ballet in Arctic waters. Her recent work explores the creation and loss of memory from personal, physical, and scientific perspectives. Janet Biggs works with Cristin Tierney Gallery, New York; Analix Forever, Geneva; and CONNERSMITH, Washington D.C.
