Auditions: Problem Child / Criminal Genius

Written by George F. Walker

Directed by Leonard Mario Zgrablic

The reformed drug addict and her ex-con husband. The self-righteous social worker. The non-violent father and son crime duo. The kind-hearted ballbuster. The rebellious, spiteful daughter of a domineering father. And the drunken motel manager. What do they have in common? Are they the scum of the earth? The stupid? The unfortunate? The sad? The poor? How will you judge them?

Problem Child and Criminal Genius are two of the six plays from George F. Walker's Suburban Motel sequence.

Characters

With one exception, each role appears in one of the two plays (PC for Problem Child, CG for Criminal Genius). Actors will not be double-cast. The age ranges given are suggestions only.

Phillie (Both; Male 25-55) The manager of the motel; an alcoholic.

Amanda (CG; Female 20-35): A rebellious woman trying to get out of the shadow of her crime boss father.

Audition Process

Auditions will be held at our theatre: 9 Princess Street East, Waterloo.

We ask that actors come prepared with a brief (1 minute or less) monologue; monologues will be available at the auditions if you are unable to prepare something. You may be asked to deliver your monologue in a different style. You will also select an excerpt from the script from which to read. Your audition may take up to 10-15 minutes. In order to ensure you have time to study the scripts, we ask that actors arrive a bit early. We may request callbacks of actors under consideration for certain roles, which would take place on Wednesday, July 17th after 8:30pm; if you’re auditioning initially on the 17th, please arrive before 8:30 if possible and be prepared to stay for callbacks.

To sign up for an audition slot in advance, fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/kwlt-suburban-motel. Doing this will save you time at the auditions. Walk-ins are welcome, but may have to wait for a break in the schedule to audition.

Production Team Openings

The production team is still looking for people to fill the following roles:

  * Costumer: Works with the director and actors to define the characters’ wardrobes and procure any necessary pieces. Should be interested in a range of costuming from badass to goofy, and the challenge of renewing clothing that will be covered in stage blood. Experience helpful but not necessary.
  * Producer: Creates and implements marketing plans. Manages budgets. Forms and delegates tasks to a small committee within the production to create promotional material for the show. No experience necessary. Time commitment varies.
  * Props master: Works with the director and technical director to select and procure properties and set dressing elements. Interested in figuring out a good and inexpensive delivery mechaism for gunshot blood, as well as an assortment of props to fit the 90s. No experience necessary.
