Benedict Wells will be in Kitchener-Waterloo on Thursday, 23 May 2019 to read from his best-selling novel Vom Ende der Einsamkeit, newly translated by Charlotte Collins as The End of Loneliness. The reading will be in German and English, and the author will take questions afterwards.

Wells’ novel spent over a year on the German bestseller charts and won the 2016 European Union Prize for Literature. The End of Loneliness tells the story of three siblings who have to find their way after their parents suddenly die. As they cope with loss and growing up, the youngest sibling Jules must also sort out a friendship that could develop into love. As the publisher’s promotional text puts it, the novel is a meditation “on the power of our memories, of what can be lost and what can never be let go.” The story draws on Wells’ own childhood experiences.

This is Wells’ fourth novel, but his first to be translated into English. His work has appeared in over 20 languages.
