A public lecture in support of UW’s commitment to the United Nations’
Supported by the #HeForShe Committee of
Hello,
I am very pleased to invite you to a public lecture, “Gender: But that is what the Church has always taught!” by Myroslaw Tataryn, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at St. Jerome’s University and the University of Waterloo. A married Ukrainian Greco-Catholic priest, he served as SJU Vice President and Academic Dean at SJU from 2005 to 2011. This lecture is supported by the SJU #HeForShe committee as part of the United Nations Women<http://www.unwomen.org/en>’s HeForShe<http://www.heforshe.org/> campaign, and the University of Waterloo’s Impact 10x10x10<http://www.heforshe.org/impact> initiative.
• In June 2019 the Vatican released a statement on gender theory, “Male and Female He Created Them.” Responses to the document show that many Catholics still accept two myths about Church teaching on gender. The first is that it is unchanging, and the second is that it always comes from the top down. Yet, Pope Francis has also spoken of a need for both rethinking Church teaching and more dialogue. In this lecture, Dr. Tataryn shows that Church teaching, especially in the area of sexuality, is not static but has changed over the centuries. Moreover, he argues that the process should be more dialogical and less hierarchical.
• Time: Friday, October 18th at 7:30 p.m.
• Place: Vanstone Hall in SJ2, St. Jerome's University
• There is free parking, and refreshments are served before the lecture.
• Please register in advance to assist us with hospitality planning and to ensure that we can contact you in the event of an event cancellation. Bring your brain to church!
In a previous age, thinking the faith was the job of church leaders. That time has passed. The Church will not survive except as an educated community. I have always thought that the unofficial motto of St. Jerome’s University was, “Bring your faith to school, and bring your brain to church.” Just as the university is enriched by the spiritual and moral values of faith, the church is best served by followers who develop a mature and deep conversation between faith and reason–as Pope Benedict has encouraged. In that spirit, we invite you this year to bring your faith to the Lectures in Catholic Experience and to bring what you learn here to your community. It promises to be an exciting year!
