Auditions: The Tragedy of Mariam (BBR #1)[cid:015c2f6e-28bc-4368-a9cf-4228b80d6c32]

The Tragedy of Mariam tells the story of the death of Mariam, the second wife of Herod the Great, the King of Palestine from 39-4 BC. The play opens with news of Herod’s death. Seizing the opportunity of Herod’s demise, his friends and family engage in a series of illicit affairs and intrigues. Mariam, most importantly, admits she never loved Herod. To the surprise of the characters, Herod is alive and returns. Herod’s sister, Salome, plots to get rid of Mariam by spreading rumours of her unfaithfulness. Herod believes his sister’s lies and orders Mariam’s execution. After her death, he realizes he has been deceived and is left with eternal regret and remorse.

Audition process

Interested actors can audition for Mariam either live over Zoom or by uploading audio / video recordings. In either case, we ask auditioners to fill out the audition information form<https://forms.gle/PoFcKWi3ok9EsoU58>; recordings can be uploaded there. We're not setting up fixed times for live-online auditions through the form; rather, we ask that actors indicate their availability during the audition windows and the production will be in touch to set the appointment.

We ask that actors prepare the following audition pieces:

  *   A general monologue, performed in two different emotional tones;
  *   A Shakespearean (or other Tudor-era) monologue;
  * Three tongue twisters (short ones repeated a few times)

Note that if your general monologue is already Shakespearean, you do not need to prepare a second Shakespearean monologue. Monologue Archive<https://www.monologuearchive.com/> and Shakespeare's Monologues<https://www.shakespeare-monologues.org/home> are great sources for monologues, and tongue-twister.net<http://www.tongue-twister.net/en.htm> will give you some options for tongue-twisters.

Rehearsal process

Rehearsals will be held 3-4 times a week for 2-3 weeks, variously online or outside to minimize the risk of COVID transmission. After the rehearsal period the production will set up an appointment to record the production for later dissemination.

Call for sound technicians

We are also looking for technicians for the production. If you are interested in any aspect of audio tech (recording, mixing, sound effects) and would like to participate in that way, please fill out the audition information form as well.
