Hi all,

Apologies for the advertisement. This is a new course and I'm keen. Could
you please forward this to any of your incoming and current grads that
might be interested?

Prof. Ian Goldberg, (Computer Science) and I (Sociology and Legal Studies)
are offering a new interdisciplinary graduate seminar in the F20 term. It
will be synchronous, on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10-11:50 am. We welcome
grads from other departments.

Graduate Seminar in Surveillance and Privacy

CS 858 / SOC 701

Contact-tracing apps and COVID-19. Mass social media surveillance and
censorship in China. Facial recognition and #BLM protest movements. Voter
manipulation and Facebook. These contemporary events are deeply tied to
issues of privacy and the social good. Understanding these events and--more
importantly--responding to them requires both technological capabilities
and critical analysis skills.

This interfaculty graduate seminar explores how surveillance technologies
contribute to social inequality, both in Canada and globally. It examines
current research into technologies that help users maintain their privacy,
both online and in the physical world. Seminar readings, discussions, and
projects demonstrate how successful interventions into privacy violations,
censorship, and digital discrimination are interdisciplinary, and rely on
the intersection of technology, policy, law, and critical theory.
