Happy Monday, everyone!
By now you’ve probably heard that Canada plans to start testing its COVID-19 contact tracing app – COVID Alert - in Ontario in the next few weeks. The Defence and Security Foresight Group (DSF-G) is pleased to co-host a lunch and learn webinar with the Cyber Security and Privacy Institute (CPI) on Friday, June 26, 2020, at 12:00 PM (EDT) on Managing the Pandemic through Contact-Tracing Apps: Technological Innovation or a Challenge to Privacy and Civil Liberties?
This event will feature a panel discussion with:
* Dr. Douglas Stebila, CPI, University of Waterloo;
* Dr. Plinio Morita, CPI, University of Waterloo;
* Dr. Bessma Momani, DSF-G, University of Waterloo; and
* Moderated by Dr. Florian Kerschbaum, CPI, University of Waterloo
Our panel will discuss the implications of emerging COVID-19 contact tracing apps from the perspectives of their respective faculties. Notably, they will discuss how Canadian jurisdictions are developing and deploying contact-tracing apps without sufficient technical review by independent security and privacy experts. This panel will highlight how such reviews should be conducted by experts from the Canadian security and privacy ecosystem, with a mandate to protect civil liberties and uphold the highest ethical and technical standards.
