Dear colleagues,

I hope you'll be able to join us for the Department of Philosophy's biennial Sharma Lecture on Friday, April 23rd from 3:30 to 5:00 PM via WebEx. Registration details are below.

This year's Sharma Lecture is by Professor Regina Rini<https://reginarini.net/>, Canada Research Chair in Philosophy of Moral and Social Cognition in the Department of Philosophy at York University.

"Deepfakes, Deep Harms":
Deepfakes are algorithmically modified video and audio recordings that project one person's appearance on to that of another, creating an apparent recording of an event that never took place. Many scholars and journalists have attended to the political risks of deepfake deception. But there are other, more subtle, ways in which deepfakes have the potential to cause harm. This talk surveys three. First: deepfaked 'frankenporn' digitally fuses the images of different women to create pliable characters incapable of giving consent, heightening the long-standing feminist debate over objectification in pornography. Second: deepfakes enable 'illocutionary wronging' when an individual is forced to engage in undesired speech acts to deny or correct the misleading evidence of a publicized deepfake. Third: deepfakes may facilitate campaigns of 'panoptic gaslighting', where systematically altered recordings of a single person's life erode their first-personal memory and identity across time. Taken together, these harms illustrate the ways that novel technology can shift and amplify existing ethical concerns.
