I have been lately blessed with a new course for this fall, entitled
the Reader and the Viewer. It is to be an exploration of stage
texts as they have been treated, and mistreated, by video and film.
There are interesting theoretical studies of the relationship
between script and performance (Bennett's, etc), studies
interrogating Drama as genre.... But I don't know of any potential
textbooks which explore the relationship between particular written
texts and particular cinematic treatments of those texts. Any help
out there? While I'm at it: does anyone know a source for laser
discs of the Olivier Shakespeare films? they appear to
beunattainable on this continent.
