President Howard Clark, at Dalhousie, on the advice of his Budget
Advisory Committee, has proposed the closure, in the following year,
of the Theatre Department, together with the Costume Studies Programme,
Music, Library Science, Public Relations, Henson College, and the
Art Gallery. This represents an unprecedented attack on performing
arts subjects.
Professor Lynn Sorge, Chair of the Theatre Department, has asked
that we write letters protesting this proposed decision. If you wish
to refute President Clark's arguments in detail, you can obtain a
copy of his address to an open university meeting on 22 September by
getting directly in touch with him. Failing that, more general
letters and faxes objecting to his decision will also be much
appreciated. The hope is that a national campaign will get Dalhousie
to reverse its decision.
Your letters and faxes should be sent to: *Dr Howard C. Clark,
President & Vice-Chancellor, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova
Scotia B3H 4H6, Fax 902 494 1658.* Please be sure to copy all letters
and faxes to *Professor Lynn Sorge, Chair, Theatre Department, 6101
University Avenue, Halifax, Nova Scotia B3H 3J5, Fax 902 494 1637.*
It would also be very useful if you could send copies of your
letters and faxes to:
(1) The Honourable John Savage
Premier of Nova Scotia
P. O. Box 726
Halifax, Nova Scotia
B3J 2T3
(2) Her Worship
Mayor Moira Ducharme
City Hall, P. O. box 1749
Halifax, Nova Scotia
B3J 3A5
(3) Dr Kenneth A. Dunn
Chair of Senate
Room 210
A & A Building
Dalhousie University
Halifax, Nova Scotia
B3H 4H6
(4) Mr Allan C. Shaw
Chair, The Shaw Group
P. O. Box 996
Halifax, Nova Scotia
B3J 2X1
(5) Professor Rowland Smith
Dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Dalhousie University
Halifax, Nova Scotia
B3H 4H6
Letters should stress that this proposed closure will do a great
disservice to Dalhousie's contribution to the ACADEMIC and CULTURAL
life of the country.
Lynn Sorge and her colleagues are hoping that we will
send a Niagara of faxes and letters so that President Clark will
understand that this is an ill-advised decision.
The university is currently debating this issue; so it would be ideal
if you could send something by the end of October.
I hope that you can help.
