David Garrick research query

I am trying to locate the source of the following statement for
annotation purposes:

"the sentimental heroics of a David Garrick--who you remember
deliberately got drunk in the play in order to repel the young
     girl who loves him"

1) Did Garrick perform in a play where his character go drunk to
     repel some young woman's love?
2) If so, which play? (I've looked through Garrick biographies
without much success, did I miss something?)
3) Was this an incident from Garrick's own life?

Does anyone have a clue or suggestion? Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!
