I wrote a paper in _Etudes theatrales/Essays in Theatre_ ("La didascalie
comme discours signifiant. Pour une (autre) approche du texte theatral",
vol. 11, # 1, november 1992) on this topic. Unfortunately it is in
French, but there is a (good :-)  ) bibliography at the end.
