The Juneau commission...

Now that the cat is out of the bag and the discussion about THE cultural
institution (as if the CBC were the ONLY one) is engaged, I was wondering
what do people think the impact of its various aspects on Canadian theatre?

The principle of creating a UNIQUELY Canadian channel is on-track, but
can the idea of a special tax really fly these days. Despite the
realities of the costs, the opponents will beat this one silly and no one
will want to swallow what will be perceived as an additional charge. So
is the whole project doomed?

What the commission deemed Canadian culture, too, I found disturbing.
While I am the last one to enjoy the endless presence of playoff hockey &
baseball for what seems like months on end (and indeed the first to
gripe about it), isn't the suggestion that CBC should reduce its sports
presence in favour of arts and drama and news a rather dangerous tactic.
It reeks of elitism, and a cultural snobbery, that broadcasts of the COC
are "better" culture than broadcasts of the Leafs. Surely Canadian
sports are as much a part of our unifying culture as "Side Affects" or
"Witness". Or have I misunderstood the proposal?

The recommendations for the Film Board and Telefilm Can got VERY short
shrift on CBC news (any surprise there??). Perhaps these areas are more
balanced. Can you fill me in?

What do you think?

Glen
