Spectacle vs Theatre

Some months ago on this list there was a debate about the distinction
between theatre and spectacle. I just came across this quote from the
British playwright Howard Barker, which might stimulate further comment:

"A carnival is not a revolution.

After the carnival, after the removal of the masks, you are precisely who
you were before. After the tragedy, you are not certain who you are."
