INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
THEATRE ASSOCIATION (IUTA)
WORLD CONGRESS 1997
jointly organized by the Coll=E8ge de Valleyfield
and Universit=E9 Laval
VALLEYFIELD/QU=E9BEC CITY
June 14-18, 1997
"STUDYING THE THEATRE:
Research, Training and Creation"
CONGRESS THEME AND CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
STUDYING THE THEATRE: Research, Training and Creation
Over the past twenty years, the field of theatre studies and
theatre practice at the university1 has been steadily growing and
diversifying. Programmes have multiplied and made room for new
practices, often multidisciplinary, dealing with theory and
creation, training and pedagogy. Another equally significant
development has been the marked increase in the number of
university companies and theatre events.
The International University Theatre Association (IUTA) will be
analyzing this reality at its second World Conference. The theme
of this scientific gathering, "Studying the Theatre: Research,
Training and Creation", will bring together university scholars,
creators, practitioners, researchers-practitioners and educators
from around the world to scrutinize the close connections which
have developed between universities and theatre in the areas of
theoretical research, creation and training (of practitioners,
theorists, researchers-practitioners, educators and educators).
In order fully to represent the diversity of university
practices, the Conference will accept two types of scholarly
presentations: demonstration workshops and papers. The former
will include a more important practical component than the
latter. All presentations will be organized around three major
categories:
- Theatre and training: This category focuses on
theatrical training, highlighting the specific role of
universities in training educators, practitioners, amateurs
and theorists. Thus, the teaching and didactics of theatre
will receive full attention.
- Creative practices: Universities are increasingly the
site of original research and creation activities based on
rigorous critical approaches. The Conference will devote
considerable attention to typical experiences of this kind.
- Theory and theoretical research: Universities are also
involved in extending our knowledge of the theatre. This
category provides an opportunity to assess the strength and
variety of university explorations of theatre and its
manifestations.
Proposals for presentations should be sent by fax, e-mail or
regular mail to the address below. They should not exceed one
page and should include the author's name, address, phone number
and institutional affiliation, as well as the category under
which the presentation would fall. Proposals must be received by
December 15, 1996.

THE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY THEATRE ASSOCIATION
The International University Theatre Association was
established in 1994 to develop and promote recognized post-
secondary activity in theatre training, creation, research and
theoretical and practical research, throughout the world, at the
level of university or higher studies. The IUTA is present in
every continent and has members in over fifty countries.
Designed by and for people from universities and other types
of post-secondary learning institutions, the IUTA is a unique
forum where teachers, practitioners, creators, scholars and
theorists can share discoveries and discuss common concerns. The
IUTA provides a space for both exchanges and services (through
the presence of festival organizers), and is open to all members
of the academic community with an interest in theatre. The IUTA
holds a World Congress every two years.
COLL=C8GE DE VALLEYFIELD AND UNIVERSIT=C9 LAVAL
A founding member of the International University Theatre
Association, the Coll=E8ge de Valleyfield belongs to Qu=E9bec's
network of CEGEPS and provides post-secondary education to 2,000
regular students and 2,000 adults. Training programs are
provided in a variety of fields including science, technology and
the arts, the Arts and Letters program being designed for
students specializing in literature, communications, visual arts
and theatre. The Coll=E8ge de Valleyfield is one of the few
educational institutions in Qu=E9bec whose theatrical tradition is
over a hundred years old.
Universit=E9 Laval, also a founding member of the
International University Theatre Association, is Qu=E9bec's oldest
university. It is also one of the province's most important and
prestigious educational institutions, with a student enrollment
of nearly 30,000. Universit=E9 Laval includes ... departments and
offers undergraduate and graduate programs in over ..
disciplines. The Literature Department provides specialized
theatre training to over 100 students seeking a B.A., an M.A. or
a Ph.D. A city within the city, the university attracts students
from all over the world.
