Les redacteurs de _Recherches theatrales au Canada / Theatre
Research in Canada_ vous annoncent un appel d'articles pour deux
numeros speciaux, l'un portant sur l'HISTOIRE, l'autre sur la
PEDAGOGIE.
HISTOIRE:
Stephen Johnson, le redacteur du numero sur l'histoire vous
invite a faire parvenir vos articles directement au bureau de
RTAC / TRIC, ou directement chez lui. Le journal cherche des
articles qui exploraient comment la pratique theatrale filtre et
transforme les differentes realites historiques canadiennes. Les
articles portant sur l'historiographie et sur les problemes
historiques specifiques seront aussi les bienvenus.
Liste de sujets possibles:
- la difference entre ecrire sur l'histoire et ecrire sur la
representation de l'histoire, entre ecrire l'histoire des
individus et l'histoire des artistes,
- les defis specifiques presentes par la recherche sur le jeu de
l'acteur, la scenographie, la musique, l'eclairage, le costume,
etc.,
- Les defis specifiques presentes par la recherche sur le theatre
populaire, les mass-medias, le vaudeville, les numeros de music-
hall, les varietes, la danse, les spectacles non-verbaux,
- le rapport entre l'historien et les gens que creent et qui
possedent les traces liees a la representation,
- les defis specifiques poses par l'interpretation des documents
conserves de facon aleatoire,
- les differences culturelles et la lecture des documents
historiques,
- le rapport entre les modeles theoriques et les documents
probants dans l'ecriture de l'histoire,
- la fausse representation, la surenchere, l'image publique, et
l'interpretation de l'histoire,
- la reaction personnelle du chercheur face aux evidences au
cours de la recherche historique,
- les structures narratives modernes et post-modernes et
l'elaboration de l'histoire.

examinant l'enseignement du theatre dans les maisons
d'enseignement secondaire et post-secondaire, dans les
conservatoires, et l'Ecole Nationale seront consideres.

_Theatre Research in Canada / Recherches theatrales au Canada_
would like to announce a call for papers for two special issues,
one on HISTORY, the other on PEDAGOGY.
HISTORY:
The journal invites submissions which consider how histories are
researched and written in the context of Canadian performance.
Both specific examples of historical writing, and more general
historiographical essays are welcome. Among the many topics
which may be addressed:
- The differentiation between writing histories of events /
histories of performance events, between writing histories of
individuals / histories of performers,
- The specific challenges of researching acting, design, and
music,
- The peculiar challenges of researching popular performance,
mass media, variety shows, nonverbal performance, and dance,
- The relationship between the historian and the creators of
documentary evidence,
- The problem of random and minimal preservation in the
interpretation of documentary evidence,
- Cultural difference, cultural invisibility, and the reading of
historical documents,
- The relationship between theoretical models and the documentary
evidence in the writing of history,
- False advertising, puffery, stage personae, and the writing of
history,
- The place of the historian's personal response to the evidence
in the writing of history,
- Modern and post-modern narrative form and the structure of
histories.
The special issue on HISTORY will be edited by Stephen Johnson.

PEDAGOGY:
In addition, the journal invites submission, either historical or
contemporary, on PEDAGOGY, or the teaching of theatre in Canada's
secondary and post-secondary institutions. Among the many topics
which may be addressed:
- Invisible legacies of historical practices,
- The legitimacy of theatre as an academic discipline,
- Institutional recognition (or lack thereof) of practice as
research,
- The boundaries between literature / history / theory /
practice,
- The relationship between education and training,
- Advocacy teaching,
- Teaching innovations,
- Classroom demographics and curricular practice,
- The discourse of nations / cultural encounters in the
classroom,
- Students responding to teaching,
- Financial cutbacks and the effects of downsizing on teaching,
- Survival at what cost?
The special issue on PEDAGOGY will be edited by Deborah Cottreau.

All submissions for the two special issues should be made by
March 15, 1997. In addition to the issues on HISTORY and
PEDAGOGY, the editors would like to encourage contributions in
all other areas of study for publication in issues with broader,
less generalized focus.
