ANNOUNCEMENT & CALL FOR PAPERS
DANCE IN THE NETHERLANDS 1600-2000
New directions in historical and methodological research.
International conference 12-14 februari 1998
Organisation: Theater Instituut Nederland in collaboration with Dutch
Society for Dance Research.
In february 1998 during the Holland Dance Festival the Theater Instituut
Nederland will host an international conference on dance history, as
examplified by the Dutch situation. This two day conference will be held
in Amsterdam. The main objectives of the conference are:
- to bring together scholars in the field of Dutch dance history,
attempting to cover the whole chronological span from the premodern era to
the late twentieth century and all kinds of dance genres. In this way the
congress provides a good opportunity to fill in some blanks in the
relatively unknown history of dance in the Netherlands and -at the same
time- can make us aware of interesting areas that have been neglected up
till now. A particular theme within this historical context is the
interaction between the Dutch dance tradition and that of the surrounding
countries or, otherwise stated, the relation of dance history in a local
(Dutch) situation with mainstream canonical history of the dance tradition
as seen from a european and global point of view. Therefor foreign
scholars are expressly invited to contribute to this particular theme,
exploring the manifold relations between Dutch and foreign dance.
- to stimulate the discussion on methodological problems and research
strategies in dance history. A wide variety of approaches will be
presented: from prosopographical studies to reconstruction of historical
dance on stage, from oral history to computer aided analysis, from
sociological studies to critical theory in a historical context, etc. The
aim here is not a clash between methodologies (striving for the all
encompassing method) but rather an awareness of the different problems
that are addressed by the different strategies and an inventory of their
possibilities and limitations. Such a point of departure also ensures that
the different presentations can be of interest to the 'non-specialists'.
Therefor the speakers are expressly invited to give attention to the
underlying methodological and theoretical perspectives of their
presentations, in this way contributing to a description of the 'toolbox'
at the service of the modern researcher in dance history.
As to the style of the conference it should be noted that speakers are
encouraged to give lively presentations: the use of video, multi-media,
live models etc. is highly recommended. Speakers will be asked to present
their lectures/research papers/main arguments on paper beforehand so that
during the congress the main focus can lie on the presentation of
(audiovisual) material and/or research strategies and on discussion.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Scholars engaged in any aspect of Dutch dance history or the links between
Dutch and foreign dance traditions are invited to make a contribution to
the congress. The language of the conference will be English. The
organising committee welcomes proposals in the categories listed below:
Research papers
Lecture-demonstrations
Poster sessions
Panel-discussions, workshops or other formats
1. Research Papers Research papers should be based on a topic of original
research which has not been published previously. They should be designed
to take no more than 30 minutes to present, including any audio-visual
materials. Proposals may be submitted in the form of a brief abstract of
no more than 300 words in length. The first paragraph should state the
topic, research method or framework of analysis, and conclusion.
Subsequent paragraphs should outline how the presentation is developed and
describe type and amount of illustrative material, if used. A bibliography
or statement of sources is required, which may require an additional page.
If a paper is accepted for inclusion in the conference, the author of that
particular paper will be requested to provide an extensive summary three
months ahead of the conference.
2. Lecture-demonstrations A proposal for a lecture-demonstration should
include the proposed title, a complete description of the material to be
covered, a bibliography of sources, and a statement of the time and space
required. A lecture-demonstration may take from 45 minutes to 1 1/2
hours.
3. Poster sessions Those who do not want to submit a paper or to propose
a lecture-demonstration might consider a presentation of their work in
progress in a poster-session. Posters should take no more than 5 minutes.
Scholars who are interested in presenting a poster should submit a
proposal indicating the title of the poster and a brief abstract (no more
than 300 words).
4. Panel discussions, workshops or other formats Those wishing to propose
an entire panel, a workshop or a session that deviates from the
traditional paper or lecture-demonstration format, should explain their
idea and chosen format, the topic(s) to be discussed, and the desired
length of time. The proposal should include a proposal for the presentator
or chairman of such a format (and if so desired a list of [possible]
participants and their intended contribution).
THE DEADLINE FOR ALL PROPOSALS IS JULY 1st 1997.
All submissions should include a statement of audio-visual needs and, as
relevant, statements of the amount of time requested and space
requirements. Submitters are encouraged to time their presentations in
advance to make sure that they adhere to the time limitations. Submissions
should be accompanied by a stamped (excepting foreign submissions) and
self-addressed postcard or by an e-mail address: these will be used to
confirm receipt of the proposal.
Please send three copies of each proposal to:
Dutch Society for Dance Research PO Box 17152 1001 JD Amsterdam
Submitters will be notified by the end of August.
