I'm playing in the pit for this show and think the music is very special.
It's a hybrid piece. Walks the line between opera and musical, sometimes
very succesfully.
PASSION
A Soaring new musical of yearning and love
ECLECTIC THEATRE, TAPESTY MUSIC THEATRE and CANADIAN STAGE
COMPANY present PASSION by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
"music director Wayne Strongman of Tapestry Music Theatre makes a powerful
argument for the score as one of SondheimĂs best ... compelling voices and
strong dramatic efforts from the three leads and the supporting cast."
Kate Taylor, The Globe and Mail
*** (3 stars out of 4)
"Sondheim...has redefined the boundaries of musical theatre... Mary Ann
McDonald's portrayal of Fosca is haunting. MacDonald acts and sings with
feral power, making you believe in grand passions that surge up in bleak
places..." Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star
***** (5 stars out of 5)
"(Director Jordan) Merkur has assembled all the elements necessary to allow
his staging to take wing and soar... Astrid JansonĂs set and costume
designs are triumphant...a stunning duet with Paul Mathieson's lighting.
Wayne Strongman's musical direction is flawless...Mary Ann MacDonald's
performance is superb, breathtaking in its courage, heartbreaking in its
need." John Colbourne, Toronto Sun
Now playing at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, 27 Front st. East,
Toronto until
May 10
