Hello all:

As the ACTR/ARTC representative to the Humanities and Social Sciences
Federation of Canada for the next two years, I'll be receiving various
pieces of information which I shall send on to you. This announcement
is good news from HSSFC, which accompanies earlier good news that the
President-Elect of HSSFC is Professor Louise Forsyth. For those of you who
do not know her, I'll provide this brief comment: Louise is a
distinguished scholar whose publications include ground-breaking work
in francophone theatre in Quebec and in women's studies. She is a
long-standing, very active member of the Association for Canadian
Theatre Research/Association de la Recherche Theatrale au Canada and 
La Societe Quebecoise d'etudes theatrales and former Dean
of Research at the University of Saskatchewan where she teaches in the
Department of French.

As the saying might go: we're in better hands than All State.

New Executive Director Appointed

Chad Gaffield, President of the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of
Canada, is pleased to announce the appointment of Louise Robert as Executive
Director of the Federation.

A graduate of l'Université de Montréal and with a MA and PhD in history from
UBC, Louise Robert also brings to the position a wealth of experience in
government and politics.  She has formerly worked on Parliament Hill as a
special assistant to a cabinet minister, and has managed federal
initiatives, including a period as National Director of the former
Opportunities for Youth program.     

Louise Robert will officially join the Federation at the beginning of
February following a move from the West Coast.

In the interim, Paul Ledwell will be acting Executive Director.  Paul
Ledwell joined the Federation in 1992, after being associate coordinator of
the very successful UPEI Learneds.  He is currently Director of Congress and
Development and Associate Executive Director of the Federation.
