theatre sets & backdrops

Dear List Members;

This is with respect to a Heritage Canada Artistic Achievements Project I
am working on.  Ellen Manchhee, who is investigating visual arts, and I
have been asking ourselves about backdrops and theatre sets in terms of
visual arts (painting and sculpture).

First of all -- has there been a study done on sets & backdrops in Canada?
Second, is this sort of thing preserved or conserved as art?  If so, where
and by whom?  Does anyone know someone who is knowledgeable about this
(Name & contact number please!).
