Interdisciplinary Investigations
30-31 January, 1998
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: MARK KINGWELL, University of Toronto, Dept. of Philosophy
Author of Dreams of Millenium: Report From A Culture On the Brink (1996),
and A Civil Tongue: Justice, Dialogue, And the Politics Of Pluralism
(1995)
The conference is organized around the broad themes of culture, community,
and identity in different time periods and disciplines. How do culture and
community shape, construct, and destabilize identity? What are the limits
and reception of imagined, invented, and self-created identities? Can
identities be negotiated? What are the roles and responsibilities of young
academics at the end of the millenium? Is it possible to reconcile the
ivory tower with the demands of mass culture, the free market, and the New
World Order? Possible topics might include, but are not limited to the
following:
nation migrations the body science
gender travel family architecture
race postcolonialism nature geography
class ethnicity religion academia
fashion sport consumer society
Students and scholars working in such areas as Literature, Film,
Philosophy, History, Sociology, Psychology, Fine Arts, Anthropology, the
Sciences, Political Science are strongly encouraged to submit their work.
The aim of the conference is to provide an intellectually stimulating and
supportive atmosphere for graduate students across the disciplines.
SPECIAL EVENTS: An art exhibition, and a poetry reading pertaining to the
topic.
We invite applicants to submit proposals for individual papers, panels,
creative work, and performances. Please send 250 word abstracts for a
critical piece. For creative work, submit 3-4 poems or short fiction
suitable for a 15-20 minute reading. Proposals for presentations in
languages other than English should be accompanied by a brief summary in
English. All submissions should include the following information: your
name, academic affiliation, telephone number, campus and email addresses.
The deadline for submissions is 15 NOVEMBER, 1997.
