Hello All:
In my capacity as ACTR/ARTC (the association under whose auspices
"Candrama" was set up) representative to HSSFC, I'm forwarding another
missive from the Federation. It is greatly the result of HSSFC work that
the aid to associations programme has been continued. Not long ago the
news was that funding would be entirely eliminated, but a strong
campaign headed by HSSFC resulted in the programme extension over the past
year and a bit. Now here is further news.

The Federation has been advised by the Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council (SSHRC) that its program of Travel Grants (formerly known
as Aid And Attendance Grants to Scholarly Associations) has been extended
for one more year with a slight increase in its budget. This extension
means that only those associations currently receiving monies under the
program will be eligible. Associations will be advised of the procedure for
applying for funding later this month. If your association has not been
contacted by mid-January 1999, you should communicate with Ms. Katharine
Benzekri at (613) 947-9655 or by e-mail at: katharine.benzekri at sshrc.ca.
The Federation had urged SSHRC to undertake a review of the program in order
to establish new criteria which would enable those associations currently
not eligible for funding to apply for assistance. We have been assured that
there will be an evaluation of this program in the coming months and it is
hoped that this will result in new guidelines which would guarantee stable
funding for a 3-year period.
